Key Staffing is looking for an experienced Compost Operations Supervisor.

Environmental Services | Organics & Recycling Operations

This is a direct hire opportunity.  

Pay Range: $40 - $46 per hour

Position Overview

The Compost Operations Supervisor is a full-time, hourly role based at an environmental waste and organics processing facility.

 This position is a working supervisor role, responsible for overseeing daily compost operations while actively operating equipment and leading a field-based team.

The role involves supervising staff, managing compost processes, maintaining compliance, and ensuring safe, efficient operations in an outdoor, industrial environment.

Primary equipment includes front-end loaders, screens, and conveyors. Additional equipment may include dozers, excavators, generators, and other support machinery.

Key Responsibilities

In coordination with site leadership, this position will:

  • Partner with the Environmental Superintendent to support strategy, scheduling, projects, daily operations, and related initiatives.
  • Lead and train compost staff on safe and effective heavy-equipment operation
  • Operate heavy equipment in a safe and responsible manner
  • Manage compost windrows and piles through turning, watering, and covering to support proper biological activity
  • Oversee aeration systems and blower operations
  • Load and unload materials from trucks, stockpiles, and conveyors
  • Maintain accurate and detailed operational records for compost operation
  • Collect compost samples and document temperature and moisture readings
  • Perform daily safety inspections and routine equipment checks
  • Communicate maintenance and repair needs to site leadership
  • Participate in routine maintenance activities
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold
  • Potential exposure to hazardous materials; adherence to safety protocols is required
  • Ability to work independently while managing daily operational demands
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull 25–50 lbs as needed
  • Ability to climb on and around heavy equipment and sit for extended periods while operating machinery
  • Ability to stand, walk, and perform physical labor for extended periods
  • Ability to climb stairs equivalent to at least two stories

Required Experience, Skills & Qualifications

  • 5–7 years of experience in:
    • Supervisory or lead roles
    • Commercial compost or organics processing operations
    • Operating front-end loaders, dozers, excavators, and similar heavy equipment
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Workplace safety standards and procedures
    • Record-keeping and documentation systems
    • Equipment cleaning and maintenance practices
  • Proven ability to operate equipment safely and responsibly
  • Strong decision-making, time-management, and organizational skills
  • Effective verbal communication and active listening abilities
  • Ability to read and write clearly for daily logs and reports
  • Dependable, honest, and professional
  • Demonstrates flexibility, cultural awareness, and a strong work ethic
  • Ability to interact with the public in a courteous and respectful manner
